Into the Bores: A-LUX Laser Rust Removal on a C15 Engine Block

Heavy industrial components create a different kind of cleaning challenge. A C15 engine block is large, heavy, full of recessed areas, and loaded with complex geometry that can make conventional rust-removal methods difficult and time-consuming.



In our latest video, we take a closer look at A-LUX laser rust removal on a C15 engine block.

The video begins with the block being moved into position using a gantry crane before the laser cleaning begins. From there, the camera gets up close to the process as oxidation is removed from the cast-iron surface.


What makes this application especially interesting is where the laser can work.

Rather than limiting the cleaning process to broad, open surfaces, the laser can be directed into bores, ports, recessed areas, cast features, and other difficult geometry found throughout the engine block. The close-up footage provides a good look at the rust being ablated from the substrate while allowing the operator to precisely control where the cleaning takes place.

Cleaning More Than Flat Surfaces

Industrial components rarely consist of simple, flat surfaces. Engine blocks are a good example. They contain openings, contours, recesses, machined areas, and internal geometry that can be challenging to access using abrasive cleaning methods.


Laser cleaning provides a line-of-sight process that allows an operator to target specific areas without introducing abrasive media into the component.


For applications involving large castings, machinery, tooling, and other industrial components, that ability to selectively clean difficult areas can be an important advantage.
